Inhofe Promises Trump Military Bases Names Won’t Change

President Trump has said he will veto any defense bill that requires the change to Confederate-named military bases.  But this morning, he assured the American people that Senator Inhofe promised him the names will remain unchanged, despite the provision in the bill that already passed the House and Senate.

In a tweet, President Trump wrote, “I spoke to highly respected (Chairman) Senator @JimInhofe, who has informed me that he WILL NOT be changing the names of our great Military Bases and Forts, places from which we won two World Wars (and more!). Like me, Jim is not a believer in “Cancel Culture”.

Kayleigh McEnany defended this decision in her White House Press Briefing today, saying that President Trump is siding with the 56% of the Americans who do not want the names to change.  When pressed upon the link the Confederate named bases have to slavery, she said it is not about the name of the base, but about the American heroes who died there and honoring their memory.  A reporter asked how this will affect African American recruitment to the military, and she again reiterated that the purpose of the base name is to remember the African American, Hispanic, and White soldiers who gave their lives for our country.

McEnany said it would be up to Senator Inhofe to figure out the legislative issues of how to keep the military base names intact.  The bipartisan defense bill passed in the House with the specific detail to change the base names in one year, and the Senate version required the names to change in three years. Both versions of the bill passed both chambers, and now they have to form a conference committee to work out the details. So far, this has so far been the only controversial part.  It is uncertain how this will be negotiated in Congress, as this was a requirement for most Democratic lawmakers.
