Trump Says Fed Officers Won't Leave Portland Until Brown Does Her Job

While Governor Brown from Oregon claimed in a statement she had reached a deal with the federal government to begin to withdraw federal officers from Portland, President Trump made it very clear this would not happen until there is peace in the city.  After speaking with administration officials and VP Mike Pence, she said state and local police officers would guard the U.S. courthouse, and a “limited” amount of federal enforcement officers would remain inside.

As protestors viewed this as a sign of surrender from the federal government, Pence said at a campaign event “federal law enforcement officers are not leaving Portland until the federal courthouse is secure and law abiding citizens are safe.”

Portland has seen over sixty days of protests, where violence and crime have run rampant.  When President Trump sent in federal law enforcement officers to secure federal buildings, both Mayor Wheeler and Governor Brown tried to prevent their presence in Portland.

Brown is confident that federal law enforcement officials will leave the city.  She said to ABC Wednesday night that it is a “step-by-step process, and that the federal agents “will be out of the city of Portland and Oregonians will be uncharge.”  She said she struck a deal with the Department of Homeland Security.

But in a tweet today, President Trump made it very clear these officers would not leave until Oregon officials got a handle on their city.  He wrote, “Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon, isn’t doing her job. She must clear out, and in some cases arrest, the Anarchists & Agitators in Portland. If she can’t do it, the Federal Government will do it for her. We will not be leaving until there is safety!”

Governor Brown, however, said Trump is “political grandstanding.”  On twitter, she wrote in response, “I think we’ve had enough political grandstanding from DC. The President’s plan to ‘dominate’ the streets of American cities has failed.  We will protect free speech and the right to protest peacefully.”

Brown and Wheeler have tried to legally remove the federal officers from Portland, but have failed. They will need President Trump's approval before this happens, despite how sure she is about the DHS deal she made.
