    Nevada's "Late Night Coup"

In a late night vote, Nevada's state legislature rushed through legislation for mail-in voting.  Led by the Democrats, the bill heads to Governor Steve Sisolak’s desk, and gives him the ability to force Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske to change the voting procedures, with the argument the state is in a state of emergency. Secretary Cegavske, a Republican, has been openly against this bill.

The bill will send a mail-in voting ballot to every active voter in the state.  It also gives third parties the ability to fill out ballots for the elderly and the disabled.  But President Trump has already threatened legal action if Governor Sisolak signs this into law, tweeting, “In an illegal late night coup, Nevada’s clubhouse Governor made it impossible for Republicans to win the state. Post Office could never handle the Traffic of Mail-In Votes without preparation. Using Covid to steal the state. See you in Court!”

The Democratic Caucus defended their bill, writing in a statement, “Let’s be clear—we will not allow anyone to stand in the way of a free and fair election for all eligible Nevadans this November.  Voting is the most sacred right in our democracy.  Today, we are sending Assembly Bill 4 to the Governor for his signature to protect that right.  Due to Trump’s failures, the pandemic shows no signs of abating.  This bill ensures every eligible voter in the states able to cast his his or her ballot safely and securely without risk to their health.”

Republicans are arguing against this premature decision.  Before candidates have even officially been nominated as the party’s respective nominee, Nevada’s Democrats have chose to use the coronavirus as pretense to pass a bill that will seriously alter the election  in their state.  Republicans have pointed out that there is room for fraud with this process, as incorrect census data will send ballots to those who have passed or moved away.  Furthermore, mail-in voting has never been done on this sale.  GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has already pointed to cases mail-in voting has not worked. In a tweet, she wrote, "It has been 41 DAYS since New York’s primary and we are still waiting for results. If Democrats get their way, this chaos will occur nationwide in November. We cannot afford a rushed transition to mass mail-in ballots! http://ProtectTheVote.com."

Why this matters: The Democrat’s statement, calling Trump a “failed administration,” shows this bill is a partisan action.  Passing this bill months before November 3rd, they are using COVID to attack Trump, and make the case he is trying to “suppress votes.” Mail-in voting is extremely controversial, because there is so much room for fraud.  Furthermore, it does not give voters who are healthy and able to vote the chance to go in person, and is opening up huge room for error.  There is no reason that those who are at risk could not send in an absentee-ballot, and there is no reason states cannot put into place the necessary safety procedures for in-person voting.  This latest bill is another example of Democrats politicizing the pandemic for their own political gains.
