This Wednesday was to be the last January 6 Committee hearing on Capitol Hill before the November mid-term election.

Over the weekend, the January 6 Committee coverage was consistently hyped across legacy media, but on Tuesday, that scheduled hearing came to a screeching halt.

“We're praying for the safety of all those in the storm's path. The select committee's investigation goes forward, and we will soon announce a date for the postponed proceedings," said committee chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and vice chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-WY).

Hurricane Ian has ratcheted up to a Category 3 hurricane heading towards Tampa and is expected to make landfall on Wednesday directly over Tampa, and fallout is expected to be devastating for our fellow Americans in that wake.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla) has ordered a state of emergency for the preparation and response to its aftermath.

The chairman and vice-chairwoman’s statement sounds noble, but these days, it is hard to imagine that Capitol Hill is bouncing into nobility.

Their statement seems hardly plausible and should not fool the public.

This cancellation is all about television ratings.

Undoubtedly, Hurricane Ian coverage will flood the airwaves because of the expected storm surge, and that coverage would have overtaken the January 6 hearing coverage.

And, that seemingly is the real reason for the cancellation.

From the very beginning, the so-called January 6 Select Committee hearings have never followed normal select committee rules as compared to the Benghazi Selection Committee years ago.

The January 6 hearings have been a one-sided docu-drama produced by a former ABC News president, which he has tightly scripted with dramatic footage with a “point of view” narrative, as we call it in the television business.

James Goldston, the former ABC News president is serving as the “secret advisor” to “produce” the so-called hearings with the intention of turning the issue into a more than political narrative during the mid-term elections.

Not unlike the U.S. Supreme Court abortion draft leak just before the solidly booked May primaries began, the January 6 hearings were sandwiched in between the June primaries.

That was not a coincidence. Matter of fact, 2022 mid-term primary season has been an attempt by Washington, DC elites to hold the line tactics.

The Supreme Court’s integrity was corrupted and now, the U.S. House of Representatives has been corrupted as an institution for trying to sell to the public that the January 6 hearings are fair. They are not. They represent a “point of view.”

Producing something like this landed tabloid television journalism on Capitol Hill corrupting the U.S. House of Representatives.

Never in the history of any select committee was a former news executive hired to produce select committee hearings.

Goldston has been in the news business in the U.S. for years, but he hails from the U.K. originally. Goldston’s long-standing relationship with the controversial journalist, Martin Bashir, also has raised a whole set of questions why anyone on the Hill would make this choice, and especially, with Goldston.

Bashir and Goldston worked together at Panorama, and later at ABC News. Bashir had a graphic artist literally doctor bank statements insinuating that the late Princess Diana’s staff were being paid for information in off-shore accounts, which led to Bashir nailing the 1995 infamous interview with the princess. That was later exposed during an investigation.

They teamed up to follow Michael Jackson and Bashir ended up testifying in his case. When journalists and producer in years past morph stories into hype, everyone should be wary.

I will never forget Martin calling to tell me “we are going to Neverland”, which was the start of an extraordinary two-year journey with Michael Jackson.  The documentary that followed caused quite a stir, and led Martin and I to a new adventure in the United States,” writes Goldston.

The committee tapped Goldston to help convert a cache of documents, depositions, recorded footage and other materials related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot into compelling television for those who have not closely followed the proceedings.

The committee held its first June hearing during primetime at 8 p.m. The evening time slot was a departure compared to typical congressional hearings held during the day.

And the secret was let out when Carl Bernstein, who also served as ABC News Washington Bureau Chief decades ago, when I was there, stated on CNN his opinion in June, with Bob Woodward that Trump was a “seditious” president, and never before seen evidence was to come.

Perhaps, he had in mind another book deal in mind with Woodward.

Perhaps, there is a movie deal somewhere down the road for someone else.

These are questions the American public - on both sides - should be asking because however you shake it - it is American taxpayers’ money who hired Goldston.

Goldston abruptly resigned from ABC News in January 2021 after a 17-year run at the network right before the BBC apologized and paid Princess Diane’s former secretary over the way Bashir obtained the 1995 interview with Princess Diana.

“It’s a really tough decision. I’ve loved every day of my 17 years at ABC News, but in recent times I’ve always assumed that after this extraordinary election cycle, which we’ve covered at a full sprint for four years, it would be time for a change,” Goldston said in a memo to staffers obtained by Page Six at the time.

So, it makes sense hiring someone like Goldston that the January 6th chairman and vice-chairwoman would make the statement they did for postponing the hearing - their care for Floridians.

I have been too long in the news business.

This is all about television ratings, and the American public should not be fooled.

The January 6 hearings were always about political theatre during the 2022 mid-term elections.

As a former aerospace journalist, I heartily second your analysis, Christine.

In Washington, heartless partisan politics reign supreme, and "optics" always eclipse honesty, altruism and humanity. The J6 committee is all optics, all the time--a disgusting, glaring example of D.C. arrogance run amok.
