California Governor, Gavin Newsom signed SB 107 into law Thursday taking parental rights away from parents of transgender children across the country. The new law allows California to take "temporary emergency jurisdiction" over transgender children who come to the state seeking medication, surgery, or mental health services which the bill refers to as "gender-affirming care."

Not only does the new law, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), give custody of transgender children to the state, but it also blocks states with anti-LGBTQ policies from pursuing criminal or civil actions against parents who choose to get gender-affirming care for the children in California. SB 107 also prohibits doctors from releasing medical information to authorities from other states who are investigating parents taking their children out-of-state to receive transgender treatment.

In his signing message, Newsom stated that "In California, we believe in equality and acceptance. We believe that no one should be prosecuted or persecuted for getting the care they need - including gender-affirming care. Parents know what's best for their kids, and they should be able to make decisions around the health of their children without fear. We must take a stand for parental choice. That is precisely why I am signing Senate Bill 107." Despite Newsom's remarks making it sound as though the bill was written to protect parental rights, many opposing groups believe that the bill unlawfully takes rights away from parents.

Jonathan Keller, President of the conservative California Family Council argued that "SB 107 endangers every young person in the nation who experiences gender dysphoria. By signing this extreme bill, Gavin Newsom is telling all parents across the country that he knows what's best for their children. Mothers and fathers in every state should demand their elected representatives push back against this unconstitutional assault on parental rights. Governors and legislators must defend their citizens from this out-of-control government in Sacramento."
