In a continuation of the recent rise in populist voting in Canada, Danielle Smith has been elected the new Premier of the United Conservative Party in Alberta.

Smith, who is a known supporter of the Alberta Sovereignty Act made it clear that she will keep Alberta as separate from Trudeau's federal government as possible when she said, "No longer will Alberta ask permission from Ottawa to be prosperous and free. We will not have our voices silenced or censored. We will not be told what we must put in our bodies in order that we may work or travel."

The Alberta Sovereignty Act would allow Alberta to disregard federal laws that are passed if those laws are deemed to be in conflict with the interest of the province's residents. Alberta's lieutenant governor, Salma Lakhani, who was appointed by Trudeau has threatened to block the act saying, "We will try and cross that bridge when we get to it, and we will get the appropriate advice that we need as to whether we can sign, whether it's against our Constitution."

In remarks after her election, Smith added, "We will not have our resources landlocked or our energy phased out of existence by virtue-signaling prime ministers. Albertans, not Ottawa, will chart our own destiny on our terms, and will work with our fellow Canadians to build the most free and prosperous county on this earth."

Smith is the latest addition to the sovereigntist and separatist movement in Canada, which has been increasing since Trudeau was elected in 2015. Canada is one of several countries seeing a recent rise in populism amid a global energy crisis and soaring inflation.
