Saturday, 73% of Louisiana voters approved an amendment to clarify in the state's constitution that only U.S. citizens can vote in local and state elections. About 27% of voters were against the measure.

Louisiana is not the only state or county to vote on such an amendment. In November, voters in Ohio approved an amendment to that state's constitution that bans illegal immigrants from voting, reserving the privilege for citizens. The Ohio amendment passed with 80% of the vote.

Meanwhile, an initiative was started in Multnomah County, Oregon, home to Portland, one of the most Democrat cities in the U.S., to allow foreign nationals to vote in county elections. The initiative was voted down by a slim majority of 58%.

Even New York had trouble passing a similar measure as voters were not given the chance to vote on a noncitizen voting law as the Supreme Court struck it down for violating the state's constitution.
