Why Are So Many Young People Going Off The Rails?

After the multiple Independence Day shootings, where a 21-year-old, armed lunatic shot into an Ohio crowd of people from a nearby rooftop, not long after another 18-year-old, armed lunatic shot up students and staff in a Texas school, I began to ponder why so many young people are going off the rails.

Just as I was sitting and thinking about it, a news text popped up on my telephone stating, “Washington state school board director to teach sexual pleasure class to 9-year-olds at sex shop.”  No mention whether or not parents were on board with the idea or not.

Meanwhile, a related article, viewed in the same space read, “Colorado Mom says middle-school invited her daughter to secret LGBTQ club, told students to keep info from parents.”

These are, by no means, isolated incidents which are not representative of what’s going on in the other 48 states in America.  Almost daily, there are very similarly shocking reports, mostly on Fox News, because other media outlets will not expose these distressing and disgraceful attempts to hijack today’s young people and create a confused, angry, deeply troubled class of kids who are being encouraged to exclude parents in the outrageous indoctrination and immoral reprogramming which is taking place in their schools and clubs.

But the timing of it all is not accidental!  There has been a patiently waiting constituency, who have been carefully monitoring several conditions on the ground, in order to pounce at just the right time, and that time, to them, has finally arrived!

The convergence of a generation of parents, who have decided that children can decide for themselves, along with the devastating breakdown of society, culture, standards, values, and manners (to name a few), have all contributed to an environment where kids are ripe for the picking.

As more and more parents began to give up their authority and responsibility, as it concerns the training and rearing of children who could, one day, make them proud, someone else stepped into that gap of leadership and role modeling, planting the worst possible ideas, principles, and even betrayal of family in order to seize ownership of these young, innocent minds who had no idea that they were pawns in a very corrupt game.

So lulled into thinking that their children were receiving a good-quality education, it wasn’t until the Covid-19 pandemic revealed the glaring cracks in the system, as parents began to overhear what was being taught on Zoom to their kids.  But the virus wasn’t just affecting education.  The two-year, continual lockdown decisions hacked away at an already declining affiliation of religious services. So, it added to the continuing passage of decades since kids went to church or synagogue, on a weekly basis, with their parents.

The connection to a personal faith in God got watered down, with each passing generation, until, finally, it became a rare phenomenon to see whole families attend services together on a weekly basis.  If kids did go, that often stopped once they became teenagers and expressed their lack of interest in accompanying their parents.  Many of those parents relented, not wanting to force their children into something they didn’t enjoy.

It's likely that the dinner table (if they even ate together) was not the place where kids heard their parents take a strong stand about much of anything that was chipping away at societal values, and it’s also plausible that very much conversation didn’t take place, to begin with, as cellphones abducted the minds and hearts of their offspring who found phone content far more interesting than any discussion their parents could offer.

In short, something else filled the gap where nothing solid and worthwhile was being deposited into the bank of these precious lives.  But this is a well-known principle.  In fact, some of our everyday expressions reflect that very concept: “Give an inch, take a mile,” “Use it or lose it,” “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Without a solid, sane, moral, principled, and virtuous next generation, everything of real value will be lost.  All of the sacrifices of those who died for their country, for freedoms, for rights, and for justice will have done so in vain, because the heavy price which they paid has been squandered and held in contempt by young people who no longer can differentiate between good and bad, evil and righteousness, good manners and bad behavior or even possess the vision to appreciate the beauty and goodness around them.

The brave voices of old are now being drowned out by cries to “burn it all down” -- things in which they neither invested nor built, but the treasure, which was once so obvious, is seen by them as rubbish to be incinerated.

Is it any wonder, then, why we are inundated with a culture of killing, cheap thrills by terrorizing others or youth who have no regard for life or even consequences which should ensue but, all too often, don’t? Major commercial outlets are teaching our kids to steal.  Either they turn a blind eye to young robbers in broad daylight, with large sacks to carry their stolen loot, or they’re suggesting that returned items be kept by you while also providing a full refund for them.  Why would anyone, in their right mind, want to purchase anything anymore?

This is only a very tiny glimpse at what has gone wrong and how it’s contributing to the emotional, mental, moral, and spiritual sickness of our young people, many of whom probably have never even heard of the Ten Commandments or the real principles of law and order.

We are reaping what we have sown as a community of parents, educators, politicians, religious leaders, media and corporations.  We only need look at ourselves to see the monsters we have created, by shirking our own moral responsibility, in making sure that our children receive sound ethics, respect for others, understand how to deal honestly and justly and show care and regard for those who need help.

Without these values, everything will go to rot, and didn’t we get a pretty good picture of that on Independence Day – the time which, ironically, celebrates the greatness of a country which promises liberty and justice for all!

You've nailed it, highlighting the many problems in our society. However, the July 4 shooting was not in Ohio, but in Highland Park, Illinois.

Kids are to society as canaries are to coal mines.
They are both sensitive to poisons in their environment.
