Yegor Zhukov, an opposition blogger known for pushing for political change in the Russian Federation, has been horribly beaten outside his home in Moscow, after taking part in an interview highlighting the tactics the political opposition is using in neighboring Belarus. He has been hospitalized.

Members of Zhukov’s Team (Komanda Zhukova), the 22-year-old’s political organization, said on Facebook that the activist was attacked late on August 30 after he took part in a live talk show with Maksim Kats on YouTube.

During the show he shared his views regarding the ongoing protests in neighboring Belarus, where thousands of demonstrators have been challenging the official results of the August 9 presidential election that gave incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka a landslide victory, wrote RFERL.

During the talk show, Zhukov called the protests in Belarus “a textbook example” that “should be thoroughly studied by those who want to achieve democratic change by peaceful means.”

Zhukov was arrested and imprisoned last year for ‘extremism’ but later released on probation for three years. He had participated in open political rallies against the government during the Moscow elections.

“A modern peaceful protest is a siege…. If there is a wall in front of you and you just keep hitting your head against that wall, then the wall will win…. The essence of peaceful protests is defeating Mike Tyson by chess,” Zhukov said.

The Kremlin declared it hoped Zhukov’s attackers would be found and punished.

“We hope that the attackers will be found and punished in accordance with the law,” Peskov told reporters. He called on the media not to rush to conclusions over the blogger’s critical stance on the Russian government. “We do not know who beat up Zhukov and we do not know why <…>,” he stressed, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

Which is a lot like our own government here in America, in so far as they don’t know, want to know, or intend to know.
