The investigation undertaken by the Belgian justice system targeted a criminal organization that infiltrated the European Parliament. Its members have been trying to influence EU politics to promote the interests of Qatar.

Four suspects have been arrested so far. The authorities have not released the name of the former MEP, however, inside sources for Corriere della Sera claim his name is Pier Antonio Panzeri, a member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats of Italy. All the suspects are Italian citizens. According to the same sources, another suspect might be Luca Visentini, the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation.

The prosecutors stated they searched 16 buildings in Brussels. Their investigation focused on political corruption as well as money laundering. A source from inside the Belgian police force said they confiscated €600,000 in cash and several phones from the private residence of the former Italian MEP.
