Gas prices in Los Angeles hit a record high on Monday of $6.466 per gallon surpassing the previous record of $6.462 that was set on June 14th amid a nationwide surge in gas prices.

While gas prices in LA decreased 78 times over 80 days beginning on June 15, the day after hitting a record high, they have begun to climb again in recent weeks. California has seen a continuous rise in prices as there have been daily increases for 31 consecutive days culminating in a $1.22 increase over the past month. According to AAA and Oil Price Information figures, Thursday saw a hike of 15.3 cents, the largest daily increase on record since a 19.2 cent increase on October 5, 2012.

California, which has always had higher gas prices than elsewhere in the country due to heavy environmental regulations and taxes, has struggled with continued price hikes while the rest of the nation has seen a gradual decline. While California has several refineries, it has fewer than it needs to serve its population. Due to refineries shutting down for maintenance and breakdowns, Californians are feeling it at the pump as prices soar while the state struggles to produce enough fuel.

A cheaper "winter blend' of gas is usually produced and sold during the winter months in California. Governor Gavin Newsom announced this week that gas stations can begin selling the blend sooner than usual in an effort to combat inflation at the pump.
