Though Clinton carried the state of Virginia by 5% in 2016, now-President Trump won the 7th congressional district by a larger margin.
In the 2018 midterm elections, the GOP Rep. David Brent was defeated by Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger. She only won with a tiny margin, less than 2%, but her victory added to the state-wide win for Democrats who became the majority party in Virginia for the first time in a generation.
To nobody’s surprise, the new majority threw partisanship aside and began pushing some of the most extreme legislation when it came to gun control. Included in the anti-2A movement are bills to limit handgun purchases to one per month, background checks for all gun sales, and red flag laws that “separate a person from firearms if the person exhibits dangerous behavior” with no limits to who or what constitutes "dangerous behavior."
Virginia legislators just passed the first of many proposed gun laws, banning firearms at the state’s capitol building, just ahead of the pro-gun rally scheduled for January 20th.
Rep. Spanberger is now being challenged by seven Republican candidates running in Virginia’s primary on June 9th, 2020. One of those contenders is Andrew Knaggs. The former West Point graduate and Green Beret who won a Bronze medal during Operation Iraqi Freedom has one of the most impressive resumes of the group. He worked at the Pentagon before becoming a policy expert for the Department of Defense.
He was appointed under President Trump with the official title of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism.
Now he’s ready to serve his nation again, this time as a Representative in Congress. Knaggs’ response to the proposed gun laws? “We are citizens, not slaves.”
Speaking to a large crowd gathered in Culpeper on Saturday to speak out against the totalitarian gun law proposals, Knaggs said, “It’s time to send Abigail Spanberger packing back to wherever she came from.”
