Mayor Bill de Blasio is taking a page out of DC Mayor Bowser’s book as a spokesperson confirmed the city will paint “Black Lives Matter” between 56th and 57th street in front of Trump Tower.   Trump Tower is President Trump’s flagship building, and his home and office in New York City.

On June 9th, the mayor said, “It’s time to do something officially representing this city to recognize the power of the fundamental idea, Black Lives Matter — the idea that so much American history has wrongly renounced but now must be affirmed.”  This statement came three days after Mayor Bowser strategically painted “Black Lives Matter” symbolically near the White House.  The mayor said he planned to paint seven murals across New York City, and one has already been painted on Fulton Street.

While it was not confirmed where the other street paintings would be, Julia Arredondo, a spokeswoman for Mayor de Blasio, told NY Daily News, “The president is a disgrace to the values we cherish in New York City. He can’t run or deny the reality we are facing, and any time he wants to set foot in the place he claims is his hometown, he should be reminded Black Lives Matter.”

Mayor de Blasio, who already has a tense relationship with the New York Police Department, has come under fire for not taking a harsh enough stance demanded by protestors to defund the police.  The mayor was booed at a George Floyd memorial earlier this month, and there are reports the NYPD will fight back against the anti-police narrative through a strike on July 4th.
