The Greenwich Library received a challenge to three books in its collection:  “Flamer", "Gender Queer" and "You Know, Sex: Bodies, Gender, Puberty and Other Things".We received an anonymous copy of the letter that Greenwich Library issued in response to that challenge.

The Director of Greenwich Library indicated that the Library is guided by Article V of the American Library Association (ALA)

Library Bill of Rights which asserts that, “a person's right to use a Library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background or views.  The right to use the Library includes free and unrestricted use of all services, collections, and facilities. Any restriction based on chronological age, apparent maturity, educational level, or literacy skills violates Article V."

Furthermore, the Library and the ALA support parental control concerning their child's reading and believe that parents should not have these choices dictated by others. The ALA takes the position that book challenges "do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view” but that challenges are "an attempt to remove material” to restrict the access of others.  As such, removing or restricting items from

the collection is viewed as an infringement on the rights of those who wish to have access to those items.

The Library Director provided assessments of the challenged materials:

    The graphic novel

Flamer is called a “semi-autobiographical work” that may be of relevance to “those persons who may be going through a similar experience” of realizing they are gay.  The book is commended as having received a starred review from Booklist, a positive review from Publisher’s Weekly, and a recommendation from Kirkus Reviews.  Additionally, NPR called it an “astounding story.”The graphic novel

Gender Queer has “contemporary significance” because it’s about a person discovering their gender identity.  The book has won the 2020 Alex Award by the Young Adult Services Library Association and the 2020 Stonewall Book-Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award.  Booklist, Publisher’s Weekly, and The School Library all recommend the book.  It was also nominated for a Promising New Talent Award in 2019.The non-fiction title

You Know, Sex: Bodies, Gender, Puberty and Other Things is described as a sex education book with “well-researched” chapters. The author and illustrator are lauded for having won awards for other works. Both Kirkus Reviews and the New York Times Book Review favorably recommended the book for children ages 10-11 and up.

Based on these assessments, the Greenwich Library Director determined that the “inclusion of all three titles, and where they have been placed in the collection, is consistent with the Library’s Collection Development Policy and that they will remain in the collection.”

Both "Flamer" and "Gender Queer" are available online as e-books and can also be found on the shelves in the Young Adult / Graphic Novel section of the library.  "You Know, Sex" can be found in the Children’s section.

Real Americans are going to have to take over all these in order to weed out perversion.

If possible, initiate a ballot proposal, to be decided at the next election, to terminate the library's funding. Kill the funding and the library will have to follow the dictates of the normal parents.

You can also pursue criminal charges against the library board members for sexual child abuse.

The only way to get rid of the pornography and deviant materials being pushed by the deviants of the library, is to eliminate their funding.

In addition, if parents want their children to read that garbage, they can purchase their own copies. There is no excuse for the vast majority of people to have perversions and deviance forced upon them and their children by a miniscule group of perverts.

There was a time in our History that such trash as what is found on the shelves of that library illegal and who ever had such material would be subject to prosecution under the law. Now it's acceptable practice to lure and groom children for sexual exploitation. So terribly sad.
