Famed whistleblower Edward Snowden who exposed the global surveillance programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies in 2013, took to Twitter on Thursday to weigh in on the scandal surrounding the classified documents found at Joe Biden’s private office and home dating from the time of he left office as Vice-President.

Snowden pointed out the obvious political manipulation of the issue by the Justice Department, tweeting, “The real scandal isn’t that Biden had classified documents coming out of his socks, because sadly they’ve all been doing it. The scandal is that the DOJ found out about it a week prior to the midterm elections and chose to suppress the story, conferring a partisan advantage.”

Snowden also observed how the scandal reveals the two-tiered justice system that currently prevails in the United States: “Worth noting that the President seems to have absconded with more classified documents than many whistleblowers. For comparison, Reality Winner was sentenced to 5 YEARS for just one document. Meanwhile, Biden, Trump, Clinton, Petraeus… these guys have dozens, hundreds. No jail.” It should be noted that, unlike President Trump, Biden had no authority to declassify documents as Vice President.

Like many, Snowden seemed shocked that Biden even kept classified documents stored in his garage at home, where individuals with no security clearance and questionable dealing with hostile foreign powers, such as his son Hunter Biden, had full access. Snowden ironically pointed out in a tweet, “Wow, even *I* handled classified documents more securely. At least I kept them encrypted!”

He was particularly amused by the explanation for the blatant mishandling of classified materials provided by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre who tried to excuse Biden’s misconduct by saying, “We are confident that a thorough review will show that these documents were inadvertently misplaced.” Snowden mocked the notoriously incompetent Biden spokesperson, tweeting “Man, I should have thought of that one.”

Snowden himself is under indictment from the DOJ since 2013 on similar charges and had his US passport revoked before finding safe harbor in Russia. Despite appeals by many who view Snowden as a hero for exposing the unconstitutional surveillance activities by agencies of the U.S. government, President Trump declined to pardon Snowden before he left office in 2021.
