This week, Beijing blasted Washington and Seou'ls agreement to deploy a U.S. nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine to South Korea. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, "The United States has put regional security at risk and intentionally used the issue of the [Korean} peninsula as an excuse to create tension."

"What the US does is full of Cold War thinking, provoking bloc confrontation, undermining the nuclear non-proliferation system, damaging the strategic interests of other countries, exacerbating tensions on the Korean peninsula, undermining regional peace and stability, and running counter to the goal of the denuclearization of the peninsula," the statement released Thursday said.

She went on to add that it highlighted the United States' "selfish geopolitical interests" which endangers the world, given the recent deployment of "US strategic assets."

South Korean President Yoon visited the White House on Wednesday which ended with the "Washington Declaration" agreement to deter Pyongyang from executing an attack on Seoul by creating a "nuclear umbrella" that includes the U.S. sending bombers and nuclear submarines or aircraft carriers.

The last time that a nuclear-armed submarine docked in the Korean Peninsula was in the 1980s.

On Wednesday President Biden issued remarks during a joint press conference with Yoon at the White House saying, "We're not going to be stationing nuclear weapons on the peninsula, but we will have visits to ports, visits of nuclear submarines and things like that."

The region is now preparing for a drastic response from North Korea, which is likely to include ballistic missile tests and possibly the first nuclear weapons test since 2017.
