Last Friday at an event in Florence, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell made some blunt statements regarding Ukraine’s precarious position and noted that Kyiv would collapse “in a matter of days” if military support from its Western allies were to stop being given. Borrell also noted that the situation is regrettably not right for peace talks at the present time.

“Unhappily, this is not the moment for diplomatic conversations about peace. It’s the moment of supporting militarily the war,” he said.

Borrell then added, “If you want peace, push Russia to withdraw. Push Russia to stop the war. Don’t tell me to stop supporting Ukraine, because if I stop supporting Ukraine, certainly the war will finish soon.”

“We cannot just finish because (if we do) Ukraine is unable to defend itself and it has to surrender,” he confessed. “And the Russian troops will be in the Polish border and Ukraine will become a second Belarus. Do you want this kind of ending the war? No,” he said.

Borrell then turned his attention to the notion of China attempting to become a global mediator and to try and broker a peace deal between the two countries saying, “Even if they are on the side of Russia, I think China has a role to play. China is a permanent member of the (UN) Security Council. China is the one who has the biggest influence in Russia.”

“Let’s face the reality. Like it or not, the reality is Putin continues saying: ‘I have military objectives and as far as I don’t get these military objectives, I will continue fighting.’ So the peace plans are good but you need someone that wants to talk about peace,” Borrell concluded.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Borrell told Spanish media that Ukraine would lose the war “immediately” without the continued arms, ammo, money, and support coming from the West and NATO.

“I know how to end the war immediately,” Borrell said. “Stop providing military aid to Ukraine and Ukraine [will] have to surrender in a few days. That’s it, the war is over.”

Borrell also recognized that the war has essentially become a proxy war as Ukraine is almost entirely supported by the U.S., NATO, and its Western allies.

It’s time for Europe to take responsibility for it’s own survival. It’s now been almost 80 years since the end of WW 2 and all the west has been doing is give, give, giving to maintain some kind of European status quo. I think it’s long overdue that Europe took responsibility for its own existence. As a European descendant, I have no connection whatsoever to the old country. What are they going to do for me. The US is stripping itself bare to protect Europe, it’s time to walk away and look after ourselves. We have our own Chinese concerns to consider. Certainly Europe is not going to come to our aid when the time comes. And it will come.
