Update: The White House has announced that the Government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump's terms. Tariffs and sanctions will be held in reserve to make sure Colombia honors the agreement. Visa sanctions and enhanced inspections will remain in effect until the first planeload of Colombian deportees is successfully returned.
In less than 24 hours, the diplomatic relations between Washington and Bogotá have seriously deteriorated. After the Colombian government refused two military flights carrying migrants to be repatriated, the Trump administration strongly reacted by closing the visas office at the American embassy in Colombia, and announcing possible tariffs on Colombian export products, among other sanctions.

The main Colombian newspapers report a rapid implementation of sanctions. Visa restrictions on government employees involved in the cancelation of the repatriation flights were signed by Secretary Rubio, and now it is reported that the visa restrictions also apply to all Colombian government officers, as well as Colombians working for international organizations such as the World Bank and the Inter American Development Bank.
President Petro dismissed the visa restrictions on him and his family, saying in his social media account “Do not waste your time. We have no visas. We had the right to enter but it does not matter. The world is more beautiful, and Colombia is the most”. He is defending his position that the treatment of deported migrants is inhumane and Latin American countries should unite to guarantee the dignity of all migrants.
The sanctions package also includes a 25% tariff on all Colombian exports to the USA, which represent 29% of the country’s total exports. The main products are oil, gold, coffee, and gold.
Colombia has indicated that a similar tariff will be imposed on all American imports as well.
