The Connecticut People’s World Committee just held its annual Amistad Awards on December 9th in New Haven, marking the 104th anniversary of the Communist Party USA's founding.

Connecticut State Rep. Robyn Porter offered “sincerest congratulations” to recipients of the Amistad Awards on behalf of the Connecticut General Assembly and Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas.

The event, which was themed "It’s an Enough is Enough Moment, Time to Organize!”, honored CT State Senator Gary Winfield, who is described as a fearless defender of racial, economic and social justice; Stacie Harris-Byrdsong, who is the president of AFSCME Council 4 and is passionate about equity and economic justice; and Luis Luna, the Husky 4 Immigrants coalition manager who challenges "the very foundations of systemic oppression" and works towards a future of "justice and equity" for all.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), which encouraged members to attend the communist awards ceremony, wrote that the award recipients were "being recognized for their commitment to organizing priorities that address racial equity, climate change, voting rights and the common good."

This year's award citations were initiated by State Senator Gary Winfield and State Representatives Robyn Porter, Patricia Dillon, Alphonse Paolillo, Juan Candelaria, Roland Lamar and Toni Walker.

The citations for awardees said, “Congratulations and thank you for being a catalyst for change in the ongoing struggle for a better and more inclusive society. The entire membership extends its very best wishes on this memorial occasion and expresses the hope for continued success.”

The documents were signed by President Pro Tempore Martin Looney, Speaker of the House Matt Ritter and Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas.

Senator Jan Hochadel and Barbara Vereen presented the award to Senator Gary Winfield who praised the Communist Party to the sound of thunderous applause.

Everyone in attendance was well aware that the Amistad Awards are affiliated with the Communist Party... unlike past attendee Richard "Da Nang Dick" Blumenthal who denied knowing the Amistad Awards were run by communists who are struggling to "reject white supremacy and fascist hate" while fighting for the "right to end the war economy, for living wage jobs, health care and the right to choice, education, an end to systemic racism, discrimination and deportations, tax the rich, address climate change and for voting rights."

The 2023 People’s World Amistad Awards Adbook features a very long list of communist supporters and sympathizers who purchased ads to help fund the awards, including labor and teachers unions, the Communist Party and many local clubs, activist organizations, professionals, churches and local businesses. See below for a list of supporters featured in the Adbook.
