Colorado's US Congressional Representative Ken Buck (4th District, Republican) has announced he will not seek re-election in 2024. The 4th Colorado Congressional district covers the eastern plains of Colorado and considered a solid Republican seat. Buck was considered a reliable Republican member but has appeared to diverge with his conservative constituents in the last year.
Buck stated in his announcement about the reason he will not seek re-election "Our nation is on a collision course with reality and a steadfast commitment to truth, even uncomfortable truths, is the only way forward," speaking to election denials from his own party about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He added, "We lost our way." In Colorado tradition, members of the Colorado delegation normally make these formal announcements from Colorado in front of supporters, Buck side-stepped tradition and made his statement from Washington DC.
In October, Buck was part of the group of eight who originally voted to oust Congressman Kevin McCarthy from the US House Speakership, he then opposed Trump-endorsed America First candidate Jim Jordan in favor of Tom Emmer. When Trump publicly stated his opposition to Tom Emmer's candidacy, Emmer removed his name from consideration. Then Mike Johnson emerged as the lead Speaker candidate and every Republican including Ken Buck voted in support of Mike Johnson.
What made Ken Buck pick this moment to announce he will not seek re-election? We do not know for sure. This seat will open up and some who consider Ken Buck a RINO are grateful for his announced departure. There will likely be many candidates in contention. We will see who steps up to run for this position. Colorado has a cross-section of conservative candidates, so this will likely be a spirited contest for Ken's replacement.
