North Korea launched its fifth round of testing in the last 10 days, but this time, fired a ballistic missile over Japanese airspace for the first time in five years.
This could be interpreted as an escalation, or a response to the current military drills between South Korea and the United States, which North Korea interprets as invasive drills.
Japan alternatively interprets North Korea’s ballistic missile as testing its weapons to strike targets at regional U.S. allies.
In response, Japanese officials warned its citizens by blasting sirens throughout Tokyo. Alerts were sent to residents in northeast region to evacuate buildings. Trains were suspended in Japan's Hokkaido and Aomori regions, but, later resumed operations after the Japanese government confirmed the North Korean missile landed in the Pacific Ocean.
The missiles fired during the past four rounds were short-range and fell in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
Nuclear disarmament talks with Pyongyang have stalled entirely and are not expected to resume at this time.
