The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has announced it is breaking its ties with Marc Elias, a leading democratic legal fixer in national and state politics.
Multiple sources told Punchbowl News that the DNC and Elias had a number of strategic disagreements.
Elias has had a long legal relationship with the DNC since 2009. He will continue to represent other sectors like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) to ostensibly fight voter suppression.
“The DNC works with a number of law firms on voting rights litigation, compliance, contracting and more. The DNC is appreciative of Elias Law Group’s years of work in service of the values we share,” explained a DNC spokesperson in a statement.
Not only is Elias well known for being the Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer in the past while at Perkins Coie, it was his law firm who paid for the infamous Steele Dossier about former then presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016.
Until 2021, Elias was a partner at the Perkins Coie law firm. He branched off from Perkins Coie around the same time that Special Counsel John Durham was targeting his former colleague, Michael Sussman, over the Steele dossier. Sussman’s prosecution ended in an acquittal.
In recent years, Elias has been behind a group called “Democracy Docket,” which has filed numerous voting rights challenges across the U.S.
On Tuesday, Elias explained on Twitter that he is currently “litigating 45 pro-democracy cases in 18 states.”
Elias has criticized gerrymandering in Republican-controlled states, but recently intervened on the DCCC’s behalf to defend Maryland’s partisan gerrymandering even though the Princeton Gerrymandering Project has given Maryland’s congressional map an “F” grade for offering a “significant Democratic advantage.”
Elias is known for playing hard ball politics on multiple fronts. During the 2020 cycle, among stolen election claims, he tried to get Iowa’s Marianette Miller-Meeks kicked out of office. The representative’s narrow victory had already been certified by Iowa when Elias allegedly discovered extra ballots, and asked Congress to intervene.
“Elias Law Group is proud of the work it has done for the DNC. We look forward to continuing to represent the Democratic Party as well as helping citizens vote, and progressives make change,” their statement read.
