The State University of New York. (SUNY) is informing incoming freshmen at all 64 of its campuses that they will now be required to complete a "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice" (DEISJ) course in order to graduate. One of the university's political science professors described the addition of the course requirement saying, "This is nuts," the professor added, "Unfortunately, SUNY responded to the mob."

According to SUNY documents, the course will "describe the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class, and gender." The DEISJ class would also "analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity," and "apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice action."

Political science professor at SUNY's Suffolk Community College, Nicholas Giordano, said of the new course, "This is nuts. SUNY is on eof the best university systems in the country. Why are they doing this?"

"DEISJ is a cultural movement, not based on academics. Unforutnately, SUNY responded to the mob," Giordano added.

Giordano described the course as aiming to portray the U.S. as "inherently racist" and said that the course attempts to undermine the unifying American identity by "creating groups and pitting them against each other." He added that the curriculum tries to define students "by the color of their skin."

"To tell [minority students] they can't compete with a white person is insulting and racist," Giordano concluded.

Meanwhile, SUNY Chancellor John King defended the new curriculum saying that it recognizes and celebrates diversity and creates "respectful dialogue and debate."

The Chancellor added, "Exposure to, and understanding of, diversity is essential to success in our modern society and economy."

"As a leader in preparing the future workforce and citizenry, SUNY is committed to embedding diversity into the foundation of all it does - from academics to campus lie and evertyhing in between," King concluded.

In addition to being forced to complete the DEISJ course in order to graduate, the content of the course will disimenated throughout other courses and programs as well and "most campuses will need to make significant changes to existing curriculum to have courses that fulfill the DEISJ learning outcomes," according to a SUNY document.
