According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report (UCR) in 2021 more than twice as many people were killed with knives and other types of cutting instruments than were killed with rifles.
The UCR's classification of "rifle" includes all types of rifles while "cutting instruments" includes knives and things like scissors, box cutters, etc.
The data also showed that in 2020 more than 3.5 times as many people were killed with knives or other cutting tools than with rifles. While the data on deaths caused by rifles or knives and other cutting instruments varies from year to year, there has been a decrease in rifle deaths over the past few years.
In 2020, 1,0732 people were killed with "knives or cutting instruments" while only 454 people were killed with a rifle. According to the UCR, that trend continued in 2021 with 447 people shot to death with rifles while an alarming 1,035 people were stabbed to death.
The increase in stabbing deaths goes back to 2018 when UCR data shows that there were 5 times as many stabbing deaths as there were deaths caused by rifles.
The rise in stabbings is sadly not surprising with all of the random acts of violence on the streets of New York and Chicago with increasing numbers of burglaries, subway stabbings, and assaults on minorities and ethnicities.
