China is taking Russia's side in the arms control debate raging over the American withdrawal from the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. The hypocrisy is glaring as China was not a signatory to the agreement and able to develop these types of weapons. The United States has accused Russia of developing weapons that are prohibited by the treaty developed under the Reagan presidency.
"China opposes such actions," she said. "We call on the United States to abide by its obligations," Hua Chunying declared, reported Russian state news agency TASS.
According to the Chinese diplomat, by violating its international obligations, the United States "actually seeks superiority in strategic weaponry."
"It will seriously affect stability and undermine the global balance of power. Tensions will escalate and mutual mistrust on the international stage will grow," Hua Chunying emphasized, adding that "it threatens security in many regions."
One finds it hard to understand how China could wish for American compliance with the INF agreement where Russia cheats, and China is not a signatory. In other words, China wants only the United Stats to be prevented from developing intermediate range nuclear weapons.
