After bloviating that the Ukrainian tanks would roll into Moscow’s Red Square, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday has agreed to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the Chinese 12-point peace proposal.
“China started talking about Ukraine, and I think this is a good thing,” Zelensky said at a news conference on Friday. “But it actually begs the question, what will these words be followed with? The steps next are important.”
Speaking from Kyiv, Zelensky said he has plans to meet with Xi.
“I ... believe this will be beneficial for our countries and for security in the world,” the Ukrainian president stated.
Zelensky said he would “work with China” but only if “there are ideas that correspond to international law or territorial integrity, and some security considerations.”
Although maintaining defiant during the press conference by insisting that Ukraine would be “victorious,” Zelensky noted the Chinese peace proposal was “something.”
“But it’s something,” said Zelensky.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the Kremlin has welcomed China’s plan for peace.
“We share the views of Beijing," Maria Zakharova, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said in a statement.
Zakharova emphasized that Ukraine would have to recognize “new territorial realities.”
