CORRECTION 1115pm EST 2/25: Ukrainian Health Ministry has given an update on the number of casualties on the Ukrainian side: 198 dead, 1115 wounded, including 53 children.

    This story is developing...

(Western Ukraine) Reports on the ground in-country describe a large Russian airborne assault to secure the capitol of Kyiv. 10,000 airborne troops have reportedly been deployed by the Kremlin. However, it seems this thrust may have been halted, at least in the short run.

However, at least one IL-76, a large Russian transport, has been shot down, possibly killing hundreds of crack Russian troops. Tank columns from the north deployed from Belarus, and from the south from a Russian Black Sea landing reportedly have been stopped short of the capitol, leaving the airborne forces unprotected and armed only with light weapons.

Last night, the video below shows Ukrainian air defense troops firing on Russian transport aircraft passing overhead to the center of the country.

We have reports of over 5,000 Ukrainian dead, and 3,500 Russian at this point.

I was a paratrooper 1963-66 in Mainz, W. Germany at Lee Barracks.
I can sympathize and relate to the horrors they have undergone.
