Prince Charles, who immediately became King of Great Britain upon the Queen’s death, released a statement paying tribute to the longest reigning member of the royal family.
"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of great sadness for me and all members of my family," the statement reads. It continues: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt through the country, the Reals, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."
Almost seven months earlier, Prince Charles paid tribute to the Queen in statement to celebrate her platinum Jubilee calling attention to her achievement of lifelong service as well as her "devotion to the welfare of all her people."
The news of Queen Elizabeth's passing was announced in a statement from Buckingham Palace posted on the palace gates.
"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
The Queen wished that when Charles (who hasn't yet announced is royal name) succeeded the throne, his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, would be called Queen.
