On 11 August, 2024 a fire broke out at the cooling tower of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which is under the control of Russian forces since March 2022.

The fire is reported to have been caused by shelling, although, the source of the shelling is not clear, reported Inkerman.

Both Yvegeny Balitsky and President Volodymyr Zelensky have stated that the radiation levels around the plant remain normal.
