GOP lawmakers in Idaho have introduced a bill that would make it a crime to give mRNA vaccines in the state, including the Covid-19 vaccines produced by big pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Moderna. Health and safety concerns were cited as the driving force behind the measure.
According to new House Bill 154, "Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person may not provide or administer a vaccine developed using messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) technology for use in an individual or any other mammal in the state. A person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor." The legislation was presented to the state's House Health and Welfare Committee on February 15 and was introduced by State Senator Tammy Nichols and Representative Judy Boyle.
According to Nichols, there have been "more and more concerns rising" regarding the use of mRNA vaccines.
"We have issues that this was fast-tracked, there's no liability, there's no access to data, risk-benefit analysis has not been done, there's no informed consent," Nichols added.
Nichols argued that mRNA vaccines be treated in a "similar manner" to dangerous drugs. She went on to cite known "concerns of blood clots and heart issues" related to the new covid vaccines.
There are currently 3 types of covid vaccines on the market, protein subunit, viral vector, and mRNA. Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines are both mRNAs and were widely distributed as they were among the first vaccines to receive emergency approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
So far, roughly 400 million Pfizer and 250 million Moderna mRNA covid vaccines have been given to patients in the U.S.
According to the CDC, mRNA vaccines work by using mRNA developed in a lab to teach cells in the body to produce a part of a protein or a full protein, which then triggers an immune response. The immune response then creates antibodies that fight off covid.
Unfortunately, numerous health problems have been linked to the use of mRNA vaccines in healthy people. The vaccines have been found to cause an inflammation of the heart (myocarditis) that can be fatal and mostly affects men under 40 who have received an mRNA vaccine. The vaccines have also been linked to blood clots in otherwise healthy individuals.
It is currently unknown when the bill would take effect, should it be passed.
