The U.S. trade deficit unexpectedly narrowed in February with an imbalance of -$49.4 billion vs consensus estimate of -$53.5 billion. The shift was mainly due to higher aircraft exports, which highlights the importance to the American economy of Boeing, and the current problems with the 737 Max 8 aircraft after several fatal crashes.

The development could be signaling a sea change in global trade patterns as the Trump administration's policies begin to take effect in the reported trade data.
