Turkey has reportedly signed a new defense pact with the new Sunni government of Syria.

The Turkish armed forces Idlib in the northeast, and Turkey will establish two large military bases near the strategic city of Homs, and will protect them with air defense systems reported local journalists.

The move is seen as a 'preventative step against Israeli airstrikes', said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Syria's new Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, fluent in Turkish, has maintained close ties with Ankara. He fled to Turkey in 2012 following the outbreak of the Syrian war but reportedly continued to move between Syria and Turkey, particularly in the years after HTS gained control of Idlib, reported Al-Monitor.

In Idlib, Shibani helped to build the Syrian Salvation Government in Idlib and was instrumental in the establishment of its political affairs administration. Shibani met with representatives from the United Nations and other international organizations while serving as director of political affairs.

Turkey has stood by the Syrian people since the beginning of the revolution," declared the new Syrian leaders Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Turkey now controls a large amount of territory in the northeast, dwarfing Israel's territorial additions.

"We will absolutely not allow there to be weapons in the country outside state control, whether from the revolutionary factions or the factions present in the SDF area," the Syrian leader declared, referring to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

Turkey views the main component of the US-backed force, which controls swathes of north and northeast Syria, as being linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), its outlawed domestic foe.
