A gunman opened fire inside the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas, Wednesday evening, killing 1 person and wounding 3 others. Two of the wounded are in critical condition. Police have one suspected shooter in custody, but there is possibly another gunman who has not been detained.
According to police, calls about shots fired first came in around 5:10 p.m. Mountain Time. El Paso Police Department spokesman, Sgt. Robert Gomez, confirmed that gunfire had erupted inside the mall, but could not say whether or not the shooting took place in the mall's food court.
"We have one person in custody," Gomez told reporters at a press conference, but he also noted that one more person might be involved in the shooting who has not yet been detained. A description of the outstanding suspect was not available.
"We don't have any active shooters at this time," Gomez continued. "All we know is right now that it's isolated to Cielo Vista Mall," he added.
Cellphone videos popping up on social media show shoppers running out of the mall into the parking lot as several law enforcement units arrived on the scene.
According to University Medical Center of El Paso spokesman, Ryan Mielke, "We have two patients, both in critical condition." Mielke did not know the patients' ages or genders.
Gomez noted that El Paso police, including the SWAT team, responded to the shooting along with units from other agencies as well.
The suspect was taken into custody not long after the shooting, but Gomez did not know the suspect's age or gender.
While some customers and mall employees sheltered inside the mall during the shooting, the police cleared and secured the mall, although a large police presence remained at the mall Wednesday night. Officials have asked the public to avoid the area.
It should be noted that the Cielo Vista Mall is next to the Walmart, where a gunman killed 23 people in August 2019. That shooter plead guilty last week to federal charges regarding hate crimes for the mass shooting, which targeted Latinos.
The El Paso Police Department held a press conference regarding the shooting Wednesday evening.
This is a developing story.
