Seattle School District Instituting Layoffs Amid Plummeting Enrollment Rates

Not only is Seattle rethinking its defunding the police policy, but it is also laying off school district employees and teachers amid plummeting enrollment rates.

As more parents get fed up with woke schools indoctrinating their children rather than educating them and teaching core classes like reading, writing, and math, the number of families homeschooling their kids has doubled in Washington since 2019.

On Tuesday, Seattle Public Schools announced that some staff members have been informed that their jobs may be cut to address a budget deficit caused by a lack of student enrollment.

"This week... we've issued some notifications to employees about they're being considered for 'RIF' and displacement, so that is happening," said SPS Superintendent, Dr. Brent Jones, at a school board meeting Tuesday evening.

"We're in that phase right now," Jones concluded.

The Board indicated that its deficit was at a "tipping point," and said that its "structural deficit" has grown to a sizeable $131 million.

Also cited as a cause for the possible layoffs was the expiration of a one-time state and federal resources from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). Also given as a cause was the school district having to fund transportation without any riders.

Despite drastically dropping enrollment rates, the Board also cited that student needs are increasing and that labor costs have risen to become "significantly more than state and local funding."

Of concern, is that the Board noted that enrollment has consistently dropped since the fiscal year 2013-14, but staffing demands increased due to the rising needs of the students who were enrolled.

Meanwhile, enrollment continues to plummet as the homeschooling rate for the state has almost doubled since 2019, according to data from a research organization at Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, the Center for Reinventing Public Education (CRPE).

The news hardly comes as a surprise to many who have long argued that the public education system is no place for woke culture, gender ideology, or CRT.
