As Americans wait to find out whether or not former President Donald Trump will be indicted by the Manhattan District Attorney's office, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has mobilized 700 riot police and set up steel barricades around the Manhattan Criminal Court in anticipation of protests, demonstrations, and general discontent in response to the possible indictment.

The potential grand jury indictment is in response to accusations that Trump allegedly paid a porn star to stay silent ahead of his 2016 presidential campaign.

According to a report by the NY Times, "He would be fingerprinted. He would be photographed. He could even be handcuffed. And if Donald J. Trump is indicted by a Manhattan grand jury in the days ahead for his role in a hush money payment to a porn star, the former president of the United States of America will be read the standard Miranda warning: He will be told that he has the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney."

"These are among the routine steps for felony arrests in New York. But the unprecedented arrest of a former commander in chief - one whose devoted supporters once staged a violent attack on the Capitol - will be anything but routine," the report added.

The report went on to note that a virtual meeting was held with a dozen senior NYPD officials and 2 of the mayor's top public safety aides to discuss staffing, security, and contingency plans should there be any protests.

In response to the security meeting between the NYPD and city officials, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday morning and wrote, "PROTEST. TAKE OUR NATION BACK!" in a commentary that echoes his call to his supporters on January 6, 2020, to protest the presidential election outcome at the Capitol.

Meanwhile, House GOP investigators are demanding that the Manhattan DA explain their alleged decision to prosecute the former president.

A letter sent on Monday to Bragg from Representatives Jim Jordan (Judiciary Chairman), James Comer (Oversight Chairman), and Bryan Steil (House Admin Chair) reads, "You are reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority: the indictment of a former President of the United States and current declared candidate for that office."

"This indictment comes after years of your office searching for a basis - any basis - on which to bring charges, ultimately settling on a novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country and one that federal authorities declined to pursue," the letter continued.

The letter also calls out former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who is a convicted perjurer and has become Bragg's star witness, as having a "serious credibility problem."

The letter also issues a demand for Bragg to produce all documents and communications related to the decision.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also had plenty to say about the potential indictment earlier this week while meeting with House Republicans in Orlando, Florida. "This is the type of thing America hates, and it divides America, and it is wrong," McCarthy said. He has also accused Bragg of reducing penalties for New York criminals while prosecuting political opponents.

"It's interesting to me he spent his whole time as a DA lowering felonies, not to prosecute. I think Republicans and Democrats alike hate this type of justice," McCarthy concluded.

While an indictment has not yet officially been announced, it's clear that the NYPD and the mayor's office are not taking any chances regarding security. Now, all Americans can do is wait and speculate.
