Amid mounting backlash that began in April when Bud Lite put transgender TikTok personality Dylan Mulvaney's face on its beer can as part of the company's March Madness ad campaign, a growing number of retailers have begun second-guessing their decision to go woke with little consideration for the majority of the consumers they serve. Boycotts are building against brands and stores such as Target and Kohl's. In Los Angeles parents have even taken to boycotting pride assemblies by keeping their children home from public schools.
Just as things seemed to be cooling a little in the media for Bud Lite, backlash erupted again this month when Target released its annual "PRIDE" collection, which this year includes LGBTQ-friendly children's clothing. Angry customers, tired of having pride constantly forced on them and their children, confronted workers and knocked over displays in some locations, forcing the company to move pride displays to the back of certain stores. Target has also seen a 12 percent drop in its shares, which has resulted in a staggering $9 billion loss in the company's market capitalization, according to the New York Post.
The pushback began days after Target CEO Brian Cornell stated that the LGBTQ-friendly products were "the right thing for society."
In a statement addressing the company's removal of pride displays, Target said, "Since introducing this year's collection, we've experienced threats impacting our team members' sense of safety and well-being while at work."
"Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior."
Meanwhile, Kohl's is now facing calls for a boycott after selling a pride onesie for 3-month-old babies.
Online commentator ALX wrote next to a picture of the onesie, "In case you need clothes for your Gay or Trans 3 month old, Kohl's has you covered."
The onesie is not the only pride children's clothing to be found in Kohl's stores with a shirt that has Minnie Mouse ears laid over a rainbow flag with the words, "Belong, believe, be proud" and another shirt with the statement "Ask me my pronouns" printed on the front.
In addition to boycotting Kohl's, many have taken to social media to question how the company could have made such a move after seeing what happened to other companies like Bud Lite. The End Wokeness account tweeted, "Looks like Kohl's didn't learn a thing from Bud Lite and Target."
Kohl's is already beginning to see the fallout from longtime faithful customers with one writing a review for the retailer that said, "Leave sexuality out of clothing for babies. Absolutely ridiculous. Bye Kohl's!"
Another shopper simply wrote, "I'm OUT. This is disgusting."
The backlash against woke culture going too far hasn't stopped with fed-up retail customers but has also extended to angry parents who are frustrated by the country's education system working to indoctrinate their children.
A Los Angeles County elementary school in North Hollywood has angered a group of parents after it planned a series of LGBTQ+ events for its K-5th grade students on June 2. The group has called for a boycott of the "sexually explicit" activities and has called for other parents to "keep your kids home and innocent."
Geoge Dzhabroyan who opposes the planned assembly and other activities said, "We respect everyone, but some things are appropriate for children [of] that age, and some things are not."
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has confirmed that parents are allowed to have their children skip pride-related events.
However, for the parents, the issue remains that LAUSD seems to have more control over what their children are exposed to than they do as parents.
"Hopefully the message gets across and people understand that parents should be the primary contact of what their children should be exposed to," Dzhabroyan concluded.
With backlash building from retail consumers to concerned parents and Pride month not officially kicking off until June 1, one must wonder what the next blow to woke culture will be over the coming weeks and whether or not retailers and school districts will take heed of the building resentment around their blind embrace of a culture that claims to promote "inclusion" yet has served few and pushed out millions.
