As Target continues to face backlash and fallout from its release this month of pro-transgender clothing for children as part of its annual Pride collection, it has come out that the retailer's Vice President of Brand Marketing, Carlos Saavedra, is also the treasurer for the pro-transgender advocacy group, Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

The advocacy group encourages schools across the nation to pass and enforce policies that prevent parents from being informed of their children's gender identities at school. The group also pressures schools to add explicitly sexual books to their libraries.

GLSEN's policy for schools that it has tried to force on numerous school districts across the country says that "[the local education agency] shall ensure that all personally identifiable and medical information relating to transgender and nonbinary students is kept confidential."

"Staff or educators shall not disclose any information that may reveal a student's gender identity to others, including parents or guardian," the policy added. "This disclosure must be discussed with the student, prior to any action," it concludes.

The advocacy group also works in conjunction with Target and other retailers for their pride month campaigns. The company also makes an annual donation to GLSEN every year with this year's contribution being approximately $2.1 million.

Target reiterated its support for the organization in a statement saying that GLSEN "leads the movement in creating affirming.... and anti-racist spaces for LGBTQIA+ students. We are proud o f10+ years of collaboration with GLSEN and continue to support their mission."

Target has come under intense criticism and scrutiny after the retailer released a line of transgender clothing, including swimsuits, that target young children. The backlash from the release has included store patrons threatening staff and knocking over displays, calls for a national boycott of the retailer, and stock that has declined by at least $10 billion since the boycott began.

The company's backslide is reminiscent of Bud Lite's continued fall from grace after the company partnered with transgender TikTok personality, Dylan Mulvaney in April. Bud Lite is still reeling from that decision and it makes one wonder how long Target will be haunted by the problems caused by its pride campaign.
