The Trump-era Title 42 border policy ended May 11 as U.S. Border Patrol prepared for a flood of illegal migrants and the National Guard was called in to assist. Not only has the southern border seen a record number of illegal crossings in recent months, but in May, Border Patrol reported encounters with 29 terrorism suspects. It was a single-month record for the number of encounters with suspected terrorists, despite the government stating that the overall number of illegal crossings decreased.
Since the beginning of the fiscal year in October, Customs and Border Protection have caught 129 people attempting to cross the southern border illegally who are flagged in the terrorist watchlist.
While the figures for suspected terrorist crossings were high last year, with 98 encounters, the current figure already shatters the previous record and there are still 4 months left in the fiscal year.
