Devon Archer, Hunter Biden’s former business partner appeared Monday to give closed-door testimony before the House Oversight Committee for its ever-expanding investigation into the Biden family businesses.
Archer, whom Hunter called his best friend in business, served with Hunter Biden on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma.
Congressman James Comer, the GOP chairman of the Oversight Committee, issued a subpoena to Archer in June, and his testimony dates were changed several times.
Nevertheless, Archer is on Capitol Hill.
Comer has claimed Archer has “played a significant role in the Biden family’s business deals abroad, including but not limited to China, Russia, and Ukraine.”
Republicans lawmakers and staff at Monday’s transcribed interview are expected to ask Archer about several business meetings and conversations Hunter Biden had during which it has been claimed Hunter invoked his father’s name, put his father on the phone during business meetings with their partners, and when the then Vice-President Joe Biden met with their foreign business partners.
Vice-President Joe Biden had reportedly dropped in during a Four Seasons Hotel meeting in Washington, D.C. when Hunter was meeting with Chinese businessmen and dinners at Cafe Milano with other foreign business leaders.
Archer has his own legal troubles separate from Hunter’s federal tax and gun violation criminal cases. Hunter Biden’s plea agreement was not approved by the judge because the prosecutor admitted to the presiding judge that the investigation into Hunter is ongoing.
Archer, on the other hand, faces one year and one day sentence in the future stemming from a 2018 felony conviction in a conspiracy to defraud a Native American tribe.
Archer’s initial conviction was overturned in 2018. Then the New York Court of Appeals reinstated it in 2020. The case is still on appeal and hence, his sentencing has been delayed until the court decides otherwise.
Over the weekend - days before Archer’s congressional testimony, DOJ asked a judge to schedule a date for Archer to surrender and begin his prison term.
Congressman Comer and other Republicans immediately claimed DOJ’s letter was an act of intimidation preceding his congressional testimony. DOJ’s follow-up letter to the court attempted to clarify that the agency was not discounting Archer’s congressional testimony.
Archer’s attorney responded in kind.
“Mr. Archer will do what he has planned to do all along, which is to show up this morning and to honestly answer the questions that are put to him by the congressional investigators,” said Archer’s attorney, Matthew Schwartz, who is a managing partner at New York-based firm Boies Schiller Flexner.
Boies Schiller Flexner is a New York law firm. According to CNN, when Hunter Biden and Devon Archer were appointed to the board of Burisma, Hunter Biden was a lawyer for Boise Schiller Flexner.
Perhaps, the Oversight republicans and staff should be asking Mr. Schwartz if there is a conflict of interest representing Devon Archer because of his firm’s past relationship with Hunter Biden. This is story is developing.
