Tension, criticism, and anger has rolled over Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the U.S. since last Sunday.
The Ukrainian leader campaigned in Pennsylvania for Harris Walz, met with President Biden in the White House, explained his “victory plan” to Harris and Biden, picked up a pledge for $8 billion from Biden after Zelensky's Pennsylvania stop in Biden’s hometown of Scranton, ignited a congressional inquiry and criticized the Trump Vance republican presidential ticket.
And in spite of all that, former President Donald and the Ukrainian leader met in Trump Tower in New York on Friday.
The on and off meeting with Trump over the the last several days had seemed somewhat unlikely until it actually happened. Their meeting was only confirmed on Thursday night, when Trump posted a screenshot of a text message from President Zelensky saying it was "important for us to have a personal contact and to understand each other 100%.”
That was after the Ukrainian received what he really wanted from America - the $8 billion from Biden.
Forever draped in a track suit whether he addressed the U.N., signed ammunition with the Pennsylvania democratic Governor, or met with Biden in the Oval Office or with Trump in the Trump Tower, Zelensky shuffled from one photo op to the other as if he were running a lap for a “victory plan” and an American cash-out.
Although the Ukrainian leader ostensibly arrived in the U.S. to address the U.N. General Assembly, he was politically sidetracked and flown to Pennsylvania to an ammunition plant saddling up to the democratic governor. It looked more like he was campaigning for the Harris Walz presidential ticket.
By the time he met with Biden in the White House, he had earned nearly $8 billion of taxpayers’ money while republicans had already set ablaze an inquiry about Zelensky’s trip to Pennsylvania for political purposes, as earlier reported by CDM.
Zelensky said he thought Trump had a "common view that the war has to be stopped and Putin can't win," adding that his plan was to discuss with Trump the details of his "victory plan.”
Despite criticism of Zelensky earlier this week, Trump insisted he had a very good relationship with the Ukrainian leader.
"I also have a very good relationship as you know with President Putin and I think if we win [the election] we’re going to get it resolved very quickly.”
"It has to end, [Zelensky] is going through hell, his country’s going through hell like few countries have ever," the former president told the media.
Some Republicans were angered by Zelensky's visit to the arms factory in Biden's hometown of Scranton with top Democrats, including state Governor Josh Shapiro, who was on Harris' short list of vice presidential choices.
In a public letter, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the visit was "designed to help Democrats" and claimed it amounted to "election interference."
Trump has grown increasingly critical of the continued funding for Ukraine, and in recent days has sharpened his attacks against Zelensky, calling him the "greatest salesman on Earth".
Zelensky told the New Yorker magazine that he believes Trump "doesn't really know how to stop the war.”
When asked about Zelensky's comments on Thursday, Trump replied: "I do believe I disagree with him. He doesn't know me."
Congress earlier in the week failed to include a request from the Biden administration to extend the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) for Ukraine in the stopgap funding bill that passed on Wednesday night. Hence, Biden unilaterally allocated $5.5 billion in military assistance that was set to expire at the end of the fiscal year.
Biden also announced that the Pentagon was to provide $2.4 billion in security assistance through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
U.S. support for Ukraine has put the issue on the agenda for the November elections.
Trump lashed out at Zelensky during a campaign event earlier this week in North Carolina, saying the wartime leader was “making nasty little aspersions” toward him.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La), who passed aid for Ukraine in April, on Wednesday called for the firing of Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S. and also lashed out at Zelensky for what he called "election interference" following Zelensky’s trip to Pennsylvania.
House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) on Wednesday launched an inquiry into Zelensky’s trip to Pennsylvania, suggesting it amounted to a campaign stop for Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.
