Ethel Kennedy died Thursday after suffering a stroke. She was 96.
She was the widow of the late New York U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who ran for president in 1968. The senator was assassinated in June 1968 in California after winning the democratic nomination.
Her daughter Kerry Kennedy announced her mother's death on social media, saying the stroke had occurred last Thursday and that she had been hospitalized.
“She is comfortable, she is getting the best care possible and she is surrounded by family,” her post reads. “She is, as you know, a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life. We are looking after her.”
Joe Kennedy III, her grandson, posted on X: “It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother,” “She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week.”
Mrs. Kennedy is the mother of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who first ran as a 2024 democratic presidential candidate, then as an independent presidential candidate. Kennedy suspended his campaign in August and endorsed former President Donald Trump.
