U.S. President Trump during his daily briefing with the Chinese Coronavirus Task Force in the Rose Garden just threatened to adjourn Congress in order to push through his nominations to key Federal positions that have been held up by Democrats in Congress for years.
"I need these people and I can't get them due to Democrats in Congress. It's ridiculous!" declared Trump.
"If I have to I will use my power to adjourn Congress [in order to prosecute recess appointments}."
Congress has refused to recess in recent sessions in order to not give Trump this opportunity.
To quote the Constitution...
"[The President] may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper." While many people know that the president can call a special session of Congress, it is less well known that he can actually adjourn them if they disagree about when they want to adjourn.
