While Congress is often full of stalemates and political games, the Senate Republicans achieved a victory as they filled 200 appeals court judge seats. On the same day their police reform bill was shot down by Senate Democrats, GOP senators have come together to praise the efforts achieved through their majority in the upper chamber, and the impact conservative judges will have on future generations.
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has proudly pushed forward the agenda to fill the vacancies, with the motto, “No vacancy left behind.” The 52-48 confirmation of Cory Wilson to the U.S. Court of Appeals marked a victory for the keeper of the Senate, and a victory for President Trump. One of President Trump’s campaign promises in his 2016 election was to conservatives that he would be able to nominate conservative judges. With the slim majority the Republicans have in the Senate, they still have the power to push nominations forward, and despite fierce opposition from Democrats, McConnell made these votes his priority.
The effect these nominations will have on the nation is monumental. Senator McConnell remarked on the impact, stating Wednesday on the Senate floor, “Once we confirm Judge Wilson today, the Senate will have confirmed 200, 200 of President Trump's nominees to lifetime appointments on the federal bench. And following number 200, when we depart this chamber today, there will not be a single circuit court vacancy in the country anywhere in the nation for the first time in at least 40 years."
In the months leading up to an uncertain election, the lifetime appointment of President Trump’s judges will secure part of his legacy, regardless of the outcome in November. Now, almost 1/5 of federal judges are President Trump’s nominees.
