First Lady Melania Trump announced today her plans to renovate the iconic Rose Garden at the White House during the next few weeks. This garden is important for press conferences, hosting important officials, photo-ops, and significant speeches. The renovation cost will be paid from private donations, and will return in style to the 1962 layout under the Kennedy Administration by Rachel Lambert Mellon.
The new plans include better drainage, new plants, and better access for people with disabilities. It will also better aid TV networks for interviews and press conferences.
In a statement, Mrs. Trump said, “The very act of planting a garden involves hard work and hope in the possibility of a bright future. Preserving the history and beauty of the White House and its grounds is a testament to our nation’s commitment to the care of this landscape and our dedication to American ideals, safeguarding them for our children and their children for generations to come."
Updates to the White House are a unique way the First Lady can put her stamp on the home of the president for future administrations. The Committee for the Preservation of the White House has already approved the plan, and it is a chance for Mrs. Trump to put her own imprint onto the Rose Garden, which Trump frequently visits for press conferences and meetings with foreign leaders.
