As the nation focuses on the upcoming presidential election, there is another election that is crucial for Republicans to win if they want to have power in Washington, and that is the upper chamber of Congress. This November, the Democrats are eyeing specific Senate seats in order to gain the majority. And President Trump, who knows the importance of this majority if he wants to pass any meaningful legislation, gave a sharp warning for those senators who are choosing to distance themselves from the president.
In an interview with Maria Bartiromo, President Trump was confident that the GOP would take back the majority in the House. But he said to maintain the majority in the Senate, Republican senators will have to get on board with him.
President Trump said, “We’re fighting very hard in the Senate. I’ll be honest, the Senate is tough. We have a couple of people that aren’t as supportive of Trump as they should be, and those people are going to lose their elections.”
There are a few Republican senators who have a tough election coming up. These senators include Susan Collins from Maine, Martha McSally from Arizona, Thom Tillis from North Carolina, Cory Gardner from Colorado, and Joni Ernst from Iowa. President Trump said, “The ones that don’t support, and I’m just talking, take a look … you have a few people that want to be cute, and those people are going to lose their elections. And that’s a problem for the Senate.”
President Trump’s warning comes after some Republican senators broke from the $1 trillion coronavirus relief package, causing Congress to fail to pass any meaningful legislation. In a closed-door meeting, Senator Cotton reportedly told his colleagues that the senators need to come together to support their colleagues who have tough races ahead, and pass legislation that is in line with what their voters need. With the coronavirus still causing many states to stay shutdown and the economy to suffer, Republican senators with tough races ahead are trying to navigate tumultuous waters.
