    Trump Addresses Post Office Accusations

While Democrat lawmakers, and some Republicans, are calling for an increase in funding for the United States Postal Service, President Trump has been quick to point to the years of failure within the Post Office, and said his administration is trying to make it “great again.”  He said the Democrats are participating in a “con-game.”

As the Post Office sent a letter to 46 states and DC with a warning they would not be able to handle the influx of mail if states shift to mail-in voting, Democrat lawmakers want $25 billion for the Post Office before the November election.  Trump defended himself in an interview with Fox News, and cleared up the misinformation that he is deliberately targeting the Post Office.  He said, "We’re making it so it is going to be good, and we’re going to take care of our postal workers above all. We’re not firing people, but the way they ran that thing for many years, this isn’t a Trump thing. … This has been one of the disasters of the world, the way it’s been run. It’s been run horribly. And we’re going to make it good. Now what am I supposed to do? Let it continue to run badly? So if you fix it, they say ‘oh he’s tampering with the election.' No, we’re not tampering."

In a series of tweets, Trump first addressed mail-in voting, writing, “Some states use “drop boxes” for the collection of Universal Mail-In Ballots. So who is going to “collect” the Ballots, and what might be done to them prior to tabulation? A Rigged Election? So bad for our Country. Only Absentee Ballots acceptable!”

President Trump then reiterated that his goal is to make the Post Office better, not worse.  He wrote, “The U.S. Post Office (System) has been failing for many decades. We simply want to MAKE THE POST OFFICE GREAT AGAIN, while at the same time saving billions of dollars a year for American Taxpayers. Dems don’t have a clue!”

Democrat lawmakers want to pass a bill that will prohibit the Post Office from making any internal changes prior to the election.  The Post Office, however, says they require $25 billion in additional funding if states want to implement mail-in voting for this election cycle.  President Trump has been fiercely opposed to state-wide mail-in voting, stating that it will take weeks to find out the election results, and that voter fraud will dramatically increase.  Democrat lawmakers, however, are arguing that Trump is trying to fight against mail-in voting because he is trying to “steal” the election.  They are using coronavirus as the reason to transition from polls to mail-in ballots, saying that it is not safe for voters to travel to the polls. Republicans have been quick to point to the hypocrisy of this requirement, as the nation has watched thousands gather to protest racial injustice.
