President Trump spoke for the first night of the Republican National Convention, and he had some harsh words for the Democrats. Trump claims the Democrats are using COVID as a way to “steal” the election in 2020, as they force businesses to close, the economy to suffer, and require mail-in voting.
Trump said, What they’re doing is using COVID to steal an election. They’re using COVID to defraud the American people, all of our people, of a fair and free election. We can’t do that,” Trump told a gathering of delegates in North Carolina.
President Trump doubled down that mail-in voting would result in voter fraud. The level of mail-in voting on a national level is unprecedented, and there are already local elections that have been contested as a result.
While the country struggles to recover, this marks the first time President Trump has accused Democrats as using the coronavirus for their political interests. While Democrats insist on transition to mail-in ballots for the November election, Republicans have pointed to the hypocrisy that as thousands have gathered to protest racial injustice in the country, there is no reason Americans should be at risk by voting in person on election day. Furthermore, Democrats are arguing that President Trump will not accept the election results as a result if he loses on November 3rd. President Trump however, has pointed to Carolyn Maloney’s race in New York, and other examples of voter fraud that happen with mail-in ballots.
But Trump has said he is in favor for absentee ballots. The Democrats, however, used their DNC week to paint to Trump’s failure as president during the national pandemic. But for many, Biden has never put forward another plan, except for the nation wide mandate that all American citizens have to wear masks. Trump, in contrast, has left this issue up to state governors’ to decide.
