The American people want to know if their government misused their power to hurt the electoral process, and information continues to arise as the Department of Justice and the Senate look into the origins of Crossfire Hurricane, the internal name given into Obama’s Russia investigation and Trump’s alleged collusion.
But after a length investigation from Robert Mueller, no collusion was found. The process took months, spent millions of taxpayer dollars, and now, there may be serious consequences.
In the latest development in the investigation of Crossfire Hurricane, the Senate Homeland Security Committee voted to authorize subpoenas to key members of Obama’s administration officials, as well as Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, CIA Director John Brennan, and FBI Director James Comey. These officials have been openly anti-Trump, and exposed their political bias once they left their positions. But Senate lawmakers want to know if their bias was influencing their decisions while in their position of power, and if they deliberately used the justice and intelligence systems to interfere with a free and fair election.
The committee has authorized its chairman, Senator Ron Johnson, to issue notices for depositions, subpoenas for records, and subpoenas for individuals. The committee will look into the Justice Department’s Inspector General’s review of Crossfire Hurricane, as well as the “unmasking” of American citizens who were part of the Trump campaign, Trump transition team, and Trump administration.
The broad review of the Russia investigation origins will bring back some familiar faces, including former FBI counsel Lisa Page and former FBI agent Peter Strzok. But some high-profile Obama staffers are also on the list for subpoenas, including Obama’s former chief of staff Dennis McDonough. The list also includes former US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power, former FBI director of counterintelligence Bill Preistap, former White House national security adviser Susan Rice, as well as Kevin Clinesmith, who has already plead guilty to a false statement.
Most importantly, there will be a subpoena for “the production of all records” from the DOJ on anything related to the FBI’s original Russia investigation and the DOJ’s Inspector General’s probe.
Why this is important: While it seems US Attorney Durham is wrapping up his investigation into Crossfire Hurricane, the Senate Homeland Security Committee is now broadening and aiding the effort. This news is monumental unprecedented, and could have serious consequences for these Obama officials.
