The late Senator John McCain had a tense relationship with President Trump, and the tension escalated as Cindy McCain, wife of John, endorsed Joe Biden for the presidential election.
In a tweet, Mrs. McCain wrote, "My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There's only one candidate who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is Joe Biden."
McCain continued, "Joe and I don't always agree on the issues, and I know he and John certainly had some passionate arguments, but he is a good and honest man. He will lead us with dignity. He will be a commander in chief that the finest fighting force in the history of the world can depend on, because he knows what it is like to send a child off to fight."
President Trump said about McCain in 2015, "I like people who weren't captured," alluding to McCain's Prisoner of War status during the Vietnam War.
In an interview with NPR, McCain said, "This isn't about Republican versus Democrat in my mind. Its transcends that. It transcends everything that has occurred. And certainly 2020 is the most unusual year we can name to date. So we need someone that can take the helm in a time of crisis, which is where we're at right now, and someone that only supports our troops but believes in the good of America and not he ill of America."
Why this matters: McCain said she believed her husband would support her endorsement. As a public figure's wife, she holds a lot of sway for those who supported her husband. Arizona is a crucial swing state that both presidential candidates are fighting for. Biden knows the impact of McCain's endorsement, and told supporters at a fundraiser about it hours before it became public.
