Hunter Biden is facing an indictment on charges related to taxes and a false statement on a gun purchase application. CNN's Jake Tapper asked Joe Biden how he felt about the impending indictment in Tuesday's interview to which Biden answered, "Well, first of all, I'm proud of my son. This is a kid who got, not a kid - he's a grown man. He got hooked on - like many families have had happen, hooked on drugs. He's overcome that. He's established a new life."
In addition to using drugs as an excuse for Hunter's bad behavior, Biden continuously pointed to Hunter Biden's memoir "Beautiful Things" as an example of who Hunter has become in recent years. The senior Biden noted that his son was "straightforward" in his book and also addressed why he falsely answered "no" to a question about being on drugs as part of a gun application saying, "And he wrote about saying no in his book." One memoir that was written for profit does not undo years of bad decisions, shady business practices, tax crimes, or lying to the ATF on an application to purchase a gun.
When Tapper asked about Hunter lying on the gun application, Joe Biden said, "This thing about a gun - I didn't know anything about it. But turns out that when he made application to purchase a gun, what happened was...you get asked a question, are you on drugs, or do use drugs? He said no. And he wrote about saying no in his book." It should be noted that lying on the Firearms Transaction Record is a federal offense and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
In response to Hunter Biden's charges of tax crimes and lying on the gun application, Republicans have called the charges "just the tip of the iceberg" with the House Oversight Committee Tweeting, "Hunter & the Biden family have peddled access to enrich themselves, racking up 150 SARs for shady deals...Even worse, we know Joe was involved in selling U.S. natural gas to China. We'll keep pushing for transparency & accountability."
There could be more trouble lurking for Hunter Biden in the future if Republicans regain the majority in the chamber, as they have vowed to launch an investigation against him. Perhaps it's time for a second book.
